Google Earth: The successful launch

With this launch, GeoEye honour a contract worth 500 million dollars, signed in September 2004, under the programme National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) NextView. It is designed to complement, with the satellite Ikonos, the commercial imaging tools available to the NGA, as part of its national security mission.

Designed to take shots at about 681 km from Earth and moving at a speed of seven kilometers per second, GeoEye-1 will provide images of 41 centimeters per pixel black and white and 1.65 meter in color. The commercial images they have a resolution of 50 centimeters at most because of certain legal provisions. According to GeoEye, the new satellite can take high-resolution images of the entire New Mexico in just one day. It is expected to begin shooting before the end of 2008.

GeoEye-1 was built by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems (Arizona), a specialist defence electronics. The imaging tool for its part has been done by the specialist, fluids and defence systems ITT. The firm is currently in the process of building the second version of GeoEye whose launch is planned for 2011.

RealDVD rips DVDs just like you do,

People have been avidly feeding music CDs into their computers for years, ripping digital copies of albums and transferring the files to their other computers and mobile devices.

This has not happened nearly as much with DVDs, for both practical and legal reasons. But that may soon change.

On Monday, RealNetworks, the digital media company in Seattle, will introduce RealDVD, a $30 software program for Windows computers that allows users to easily make a digital copy of an entire DVD — down to the extras and artwork from the box.

Robert Glaser, chief executive of RealNetworks, called it “a compelling and very responsible product that gives consumers a way to do something they have always wanted to do,” like make backup copies of favorite discs and take movies with them on their laptops when they travel.

But RealDVD is also sure to be a controversial product — one that will easily earn its maker the ire of Hollywood’s powerful and litigious movie studios.

Since the DVD format was introduced more than a decade ago, Hollywood has unremittingly sought to protect the DVD from the fate that befell the CD, which has no mechanism to prevent copying.

Pirate music services like Napster sparked the digital music revolution. The ability of regular consumers to make digital copies of CDs easily with their computers fed such services and, in Hollywood’s view, led to the weakening of the major music labels.

Although the browser wars bat was in full concurrent with the release of Chrome, Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 and the first alpha of Firefox 3.1, a significant portion of Internet surfing on Windows XP has never taken the trouble to save a day or install a browser other than that historically incorporated into the OS: Internet Explorer 6. Google has just proceed to update its messaging Gmail, so that the followers of IE6 not be tempted to divert them, in the absence of full compatibility.

"The current version of Gmail grows recent browsers in their last entrenchments, and origin, we could not make it accessible to those of you who are using IE6," explains on his blog the team Gmail. It claims to have, in recent months, worked to develop a patch to improve the execution of JavaScript in IE6 so that the browser can properly manage the features of Gmail. Intel introduces four new Xeon Processors

Pending the arrival of its next micro-architecture, which give rise to launch processors "Core i7," Intel completes its range of chips for servers and workstations high performance with four new Xeon processors. Three of them are quad-core (they therefore have four hearts execution). All belong to the family "Penryn", are produced through a process of burning to a fine of 45 nanometer (nm).

AT&T and Yahoo! have teamed up to allow mobile Internet searches made on AT&T's on-deck MEdia Net portal to use Yahoo!'s oneSearch engine. The Yahoo! oneSearch engine is more than capable of delivering the right and relevant data when it comes to various categories such as news, financial information, weather conditions, Flickr photos and Web images, Web and mobile web sites. According to Yahoo!, their search engine will also display relevant ringtones, wallpaper, games and other content available in the AT&T MEdia Mall within search results, hence saving time on the subscriber's part when it comes to searching for downloadable content. Sounds pretty interesting, but will cell phone search like this be a market big enough to topple Google? I don't think so.

Skydata Systems showed an application that pulls together information from multiple sites into a single mobile application. Next Version of Windows Home Server May

Microsoft appears ready to whip the Mac faithful into a frenzy with their latest job posting for a Windows Home Server software development engineer. According to the posting, they are currently looking for someone to help deliver a "top notch UI for the next release." The posting goes on to say that a: "Time Machine compete (sp?) UI for backup and restore, Windows Media Center integration UI, Live Mesh integration UI" are the top priorities.

According to Microsoft, that will help it position Home Server as "THE backup and Media Server within the home" by the time this next release rolls around which, considering that they're still looking for people to help build it, likely won't be anytime soon.

Sony Ericsson Planning to Offer

Nokia is planning to do, Sony Ericsson can do it, well, if not better, then something similar: it is planning to launch an unlimited music download service through its handsets, according to an FT report, citing sources. The handset maker is in talks with all major music labels about a rival subscription service to Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Comes With Music service slated to launch in the next month or so.. SNE plans to announce the product before the end of September, with a view to launching in Europe before Christmas, the story says.

The world’s fifth-largest handset manufacturer is in a bit of dire straits, and has has issued two profit warnings this year...its European stronghold has been chipped away by Nokia and others. With is Walkman phones positioned as music phones, an unlimited music service only makes sense if others are in the game as well. The company already has a music service with its PlayNow Arena online music store, and launched an upgrade just last month. The new store, available in Nordic countries, has a million tracks from major music labels Sony BMG, Warner Music, and EMI, and all are DRM-free.

Even then, a music service won’t solve its revenue problem...as Sony Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) content boss Martin Blomkvist noted last month: “The way it is set up today, very few people, apart from the record industry, are getting rich on digital music. Generally speaking, the music today isn’t generating a boat load of cash for us.” Neither is an unlimited subscription music service....

With each click of a mouse, the application returned a petition of 600 kb on the server. The team announced that the code could largely be developed with JavaScript automating these queries at regular intervals.

CERN fires up new atom smasher to near Big Bang

It has been called an Alice in Wonderland investigation into the makeup of the universe — or dangerous tampering with nature that could spell doomsday.
Whatever the case, the most powerful atom-smasher ever built comes online Wednesday, eagerly anticipated by scientists worldwide who have awaited this moment for two decades.
The multibillion-dollar Large Hadron Collider will explore the tiniest particles and come ever closer to re-enacting the big bang, the theory that a colossal explosion created the universe.
The machine at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, promises scientists a closer look at the makeup of matter, filling in gaps in knowledge or possibly reshaping theories.
The first beams of protons will be fired around the 17-mile tunnel to test the controlling strength of the world's largest superconducting magnets. It will still be about a month before beams traveling in opposite directions are brought together in collisions that some skeptics fear could create micro "black holes" and endanger the planet.
The project has attracted researchers of 80 nationalities, some 1,200 of them from the United States, which contributed $531 million of the project's price tag of nearly $4 billion.
"This only happens once a generation," said Katie Yurkewicz, spokeswoman for the U.S. contingent at the CERN project. "People are certainly very excited."
The collider at Fermilab outside Chicago could beat CERN to some discoveries, but the Geneva equipment, generating seven times more energy than Fermilab, will give it big advantages.
The CERN collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, whizzing 11,000 times a second around the tunnel 150 to 500 feet under the bucolic countryside on the French-Swiss border.
Once the beam is successfully fired counterclockwise, a clockwise test will follow. Then the scientists will aim the beams at each other so that protons collide, shattering into fragments and releasing energy under the gaze of detectors filling cathedral-sized caverns at points along the tunnel.
CERN dismisses the risk of micro black holes, subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars.
But the skeptics have filed suit in U.S. District Court in Hawaii and in the European Court of Human Rights to stop the project. They unsuccessfully mounted a similar action in 1999 to block the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state.
CERN's collider has been under construction since 2003, financed mostly by its 20 European member states. The United States and Japan are major contributors with observer status in CERN.
Scientists started colliding subatomic particles decades ago. As the machines grew more powerful, the experiments revealed that protons and neutrons — previously thought to be the smallest components of an atom — were made of still smaller quarks and gluons.
CERN hopes to recreate conditions in the laboratory a split-second after the big bang, teaching them more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time.
Meanwhile, scientists have found innovative ways to explain the concept in layman's terms.
The team working on one of the four major installations in the tunnel — the ALICE, or "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" — produced a comic book featuring Carlo the physicist and a girl called Alice to explain the machine's investigation of matter a split second after the Big Bang.
"We create mini Big Bangs by bumping two nuclei into each other," Carlo explains to Alice, who has just followed a rabbit down one of the hole-like shafts at CERN.

Rumor: New iTunes Visualizer will be the Stunning

The new visualizer in iTunes might be Processing artist Robert Hodgins' amazing Magnetosphere, which was available up until a few months ago from The Barbarian Group (aka Robert's design company) as an iTunes plugin.

As Allan points out, there are two very strong pieces of evidence for this: 1) Allan emailed Robert, who told him Magnetosphere had been sold to a "third party", and 2) a twitter from Digg founder (and amateur Apple rumor mill) Kevin Rose on Sept. 2nd describing the new visualizer as "planet like objects wrapping around each other w/stars/light streams". As you can see in the image above, this sounds like a pretty apt description of Magnetosphere, which visualizes sound as particle explosions like supernovas. The Barbarian Group website's page for Magnetosphere says that "We've had a ton of interest in it, and we've got some exciting plans, but it's gonna take us a couple months to make it all happen."

M-commerce is telecom’s next gold rush

Mobile phone-based utility applications, which facilitate transactions such as bill payments, promise to be a big m-commerce opportunity. Even a small percentage of India’s 280-million mobile user base can mean a gold rush for the application providers.

These applications mark a transition of GPRS-enabled mobile phones from mere voice devices to point-of-sale entities, allowing users to search for information and perform monetary transactions, all through the mobile phone.

So goodbye to long serpentine queues-users can buy air and rail tickets, pay bills and buy movie tickets-all at the press of a few buttons.

Yahoo hires ex-Microsoft Internet

Yahoo Inc has hired Joanne Bradford, Microsoft Corp's former top saleswoman for Web advertising, as its U.S. sales chief.

Bradford, who left Microsoft in March to join local TV ad company Spot Runner Inc, will become senior vice president for U.S. revenue and market development and report to Hilary Schneider, executive vice president of Yahoo's U.S. business.

She will oversee sales, market development for advertisers, small business, and Yahoo HotJobs recruiting business.

Bradford's position is newly created. However, she will take over for David Karnstedt, senior vice president of U.S. Sales. Karnstedt, who resigned from Yahoo earlier in the summer, is leaving on September 16 to become an executive in residence at a Silicon Valley venture capital firm.

"We are thrilled to have an executive of Joanne's caliber to lead Yahoo through to the next phase of its growth," Yahoo President Sue Decker said in a statement. "Yahoo and Joanne have a shared mind-set about the strategic role that Yahoo and online marketing can play to both build leading brands and drive customer acquisition for the world's leading marketers."

Bradford took a job earlier this year as executive vice president of national advertising services for Spot Runner.

Previously, at Microsoft, she had led global product and platform development, content and programming, business development, product management, marketing and branded entertainment for the company's MSN business.

Microsoft security fixes focus

Microsoft has released four sets of security updates for its products, fixing critical flaws in the Windows desktop.

The software maker's monthly set of security updates, released Tuesday, mostly fixes problems in the underlying operating system, but also includes a patch for a component of the OneNote note-taking software that is used by Microsoft Office.

In all, eight bugs are squashed in the four sets of patches, but the most critical problem is addressed in the MS08-052 update, according to Andrew Storms, director of security operations with security vendor nCircle. This update fixes five bugs in the Graphics Device Interface+ (GDI+) software used by Windows programs to draw images on computer screens and printers.

GDI+ was first released as part of the Windows XP operating system, and this latest security fix gets top priority because it is so widely used, security experts say. "If you are running XP, 2003 or 2008, you are going to need an update," Storms said via instant message.

Microsoft has not heard of anyone taking advantage of these latest GDI+ bugs in an attack, now that the software patches are available, hackers can probably reverse-engineer one of the flaws and develop new code that exploits the bugs, Storms said.

Verizon Wireless is getting a head start on CTIA by announcing a new mobile Web site for V Cast video content. The site, m.vcast.com, will allow users to browse content by category, channel or show and then watch that content on their phone. You'll also be able to access and share content using social networking sites like Twitter. Accessing m.vcast.com will incur normal data charges but you will need one of a device with a full HTML browser. At present that's limited to the LG Dare or the LG Voyager but Verizon says more such devices are expected this year.

Apple 3G iPhone on BSNL soon

The much sought-after 3G iPhone is coming to state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) network. The country's largest telecom service provider BSNL plans to launch Apple iPhone by December 2008.

Quoting a senior BSNL executive, a leading business daily reported that BSNL will introduce Apple's 3G iPhone for its subscribers across the country by December along with the launch of the third generation network.

The official said that BSNL is scheduled to hold a meeting of its circle heads at the end of this month, where it may take a decision on making iPhone available to consumers.

This means, unlike rivals Vodafone and Airtel, who currently hold licence for 3G iPhone in India, 3G iPhone on BSNL may actually support 3G services right from its launch.

BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) are the first two government operators to get 3G licence. BSNL along with MTNL was given a head-start by the Department of Telecom (DoT) to roll out 3G services in the country.

While the private telecom companies have to acquire 3G spectrum through a process of bidding, both the public sector units have already been allotted spectrum on a pro-rata basis.

Hitachi, Ltd., announced today that it has launched a trial of a similar image search service called GazoPa as an invitation-only beta at TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco. GazoPa was selected as a finalist at the conference.

GazoPa is a web image search service that uses features from an image to search for and identify similar images. In conventional image search, users do not find results of image searches to be as accurate as those of web page searches. This is often because some images do not have metadata, some have incorrect metadata, and some are difficult to describe with words. Therefore, keywords are not sufficient as the only conditions for image searches.

With GazoPa, users can overcome the limitations of metadata, and word descriptions. GazoPa enables users to search for similar images using characteristics such as a color or a shape extracted from the image itself. GazoPa even enables the use of users’ own photos, drawings, and images found on the web, as search keys to locate similar images from the GazoPa database. Not only does GazoPa support photos but also searches video thumbnails. Unlike video sharing websites that use keywords to search, users can search for videos using images.

German court bans iPhone VoIP

A ruling was just issued by the Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht) of Hamburg, Germany banning VoIP on the Apple iPhone. Specifically, the sipgate VoIP app (image right) has been banned - all part of T-Mobile's ongoing fight to block VoIP on the iPhone.

Apparently, the court felt that sipgate would "lure" iPhone users into "jailbreaking" their iPhones. WTF? Banning software because it might entice customers to do something bad? Glad I live in the good ole' freedom-loving USA where we punish people for committing crimes not for "intentions" of committing crimes, jailbreaking iPhones, violating terms of service contracts, etc.

There is a single instance for appeals past this court (Bundesgerichtshof) so there is some hope this decision will be repealed.

sipgate's Thilo Salmon told me, "Unfortunately, T-Mobile has found a court to ban VoIP from the iPhone. I am glad to report though, that we have found a court to hold up the current ban of their iPhone ads in Germany. I guess, that at least eases the pain."

According to Thilo, here is exactly what happened:

1) T-Mobile has managed to bring a court to crack down on our VoIP application for the iPhone. T-Mobile has claimed our labeling the software as "beta" is misleading, as this allegedly does not point out the pre-release nature of our software. Furthermore, we would lure customers into jailbreaking their 2G iPhones (and their terms and conditions) as using sipgate is too attractive. While charming, we dispute this.

This injunctions comes after almost two month of jurisdiction shopping by T-Mobile. The Higher Regional Court (OLG) of Hamburg has now issued a preliminary injunction barring us from advertising and distributing the software. It is still a bit too early to tell what we can do next owing to the complex legal nature of this move. I like to point out, that sipgate has not been heard by the court prior to issuing the injunction.

GSM crosses 100,000 subscribers on first day

Reliance Communications, an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group company, crossed 100,000 subscribers on the first day of the launch of its service in Mumbai, the company said in a statement Monday.

'The high volume sales can be attributed to the company's aggressive strategy,' an R-Com spokesperson said in the statement.

Prisoner Sues Intel For $5 Billion

Toshiba to use Cell processor for TV of the future

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba announced plans Thursday to use the super-fast Cell processor to power what it described as the "future of TV."

Toshiba, revealing the company's latest products and technologies at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) here, said the high-end televisions would be marketed in 2009.

"Cell TV is going to use the Cell processor, the most advanced video processor," said Scott Ramirez, vice president for marketing at Toshiba America. "It's way beyond anything that's used in a television today."

"Actually Cell TV is not a TV," he explained.

"It's a set-top box," he said, with a 55-inch LED panel for the screen.

"The box is the future of TV and will be marketed in 2009," he said.

Ramirez said Cell TV has a "video recording capability like none other" and would be able to record six high-definition signals at once.

PC Buyers May Get Windows 7 Free after July

The Tech ARP web site nabbed a draft "Technical Guarantee Program" from Microsoft that implies anyone buying a PC from major vendors after July can receive a Windows 7 upgrade for free.

Microsoft wouldn't confirm, but didn't truly deny, the implied upgrade program when Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley asked. And an official release date, isn't set for Windows 7, though Foley hears third quarter 2009, and Microsoft will only officially say early 2010. Lenovo Group, the world's fourth largest maker of personal computers, is reportedly about to begin a restructuring platform aimed to increase the company's global presence. Earlier the company said that it was able to boost market share by acquiring smaller players, but after it failed to take over Gateway and Packard Bell, it became clear that such approach did not work.

The only big and successful acquisition of Lenovo in the recent years was IBM's PC business, which still mostly relies on corporate customers. Lenovo explains that because of this "over reliance", its global PC market share remains modest. WiMax has been competing for the status of next generation mobile technology, but has largely lost the battle to Long-Term Evolution (LTE).

"We have ramped down the N810 WiMax Edition tablet. It has reached the end of its lifecycle," said a Nokia spokesman. Nokia unveiled the model only nine months ago, while usually even the most trendy models have a shelf life of well over a year.

Canada's Nortel Networks Corp has said LTE will be the most likely upgrade path for about 80 percent of the world's existing mobile phone providers, with others going for WiMax.

The redesigned search feature in TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD boxes uses the overall popularity of shows to help people find the programs they are looking for. Google's free code-hosting Web site for developers is being used to distribute malware, a security researcher said on Friday.

Google Code is a place where programmers can host projects and code. Along with the legitimate code are links to fake videos that direct users to download a missing codec, said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Avert Labs. The codecs turn out instead to be password-stealing Trojan horses and programs geared toward stealing financial information for identity fraud, he said.

"They're using it as a way to send out links or as a place to house their links and redirects because it's Google and obviously it gets highly ranked in the index," he said. "The bad guys look for services like this as a way to push out code."

A Google spokesman said the company has removed malware-distributing projects from Google Code and search results.

"Google works hard to protect our users from malware. Using Project Hosting on Google Code, or any Google product, to serve or host malware is a violation of our product policies," the spokesman said in a statement. "Using automated tools, we actively work to detect and remove sites that serve malware from our network. We have removed many of these projects from Google Code and from our search results. Additionally, we'll continue to explore new ways to identify and eliminate such content."

Unlike GDDR4, which processes data and images using the
strobe-and-clock technique, the processing speed of the GDDR5 is much

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently awarded Microsoft Corp.
its 10,000th U.S. patent. The invention, U.S. Patent No. 7,479,950,
applies to surface computing technology and outlines how users can
place real objects — anything from cell phones to their own fingers —
on the computer's tablelike display and the computer will
automatically identify the objects and track their position,
orientation and motion. This allows the objects to be associated with
data or media, like a specific collection of music or photos.

Curtis Wong, one of four co-inventors of the patent from Microsoft
Research, explains that there are myriad uses for the patented
technology in conjunction with Microsoft Surface computers or other
touch-screen applications. For example, a group of photos from a
particular vacation could be associated with a souvenir from the trip.
Placing the souvenir on a Microsoft Surface computer might initiate a
slide show. Rotating the souvenir accelerates or slows the playback
speed. Placing it on another area of the screen would "spill" the
photos onto the Surface display, allowing the user to edit, delete or
add photos to that collection with simple gestures.

Or a user might choose to associate a collection of party music with a
matchbox from a favorite music club. Placing the matchbox on Microsoft
Surface would cause all the album covers within that party mix to jump
out, so the user can rearrange the playlist. From there, she could
place the matchbox on a play button to hear the music, and then rotate
the matchbox to scroll through the other albums. She could also add
music to that playlist by touching related albums and "flicking" them
into the matchbox.

We managed to obtain a copy of the draft, which tentatively refers to
the program as the "Windows 7 Upgrade Program". Let's take a look at

The official name for the program has yet to be determined. Microsoft
is using "Windows 7 Upgrade Program" as the place-holder for the
Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade program, which was also known as

application will cannibalize sales of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader. A
BusinessWeek article suggests that Amazon's no-cost app for the iPhone

Kindle 2:

"'In an economy like we have today, I don't see people shelling out
hundreds of dollars for a device which replicates something they

But while the Kindle 2 certainly is no bargain at $359, I doubt that
Kindle for iPhone will cut into Kindle hardware sales one bit. If
anything, the app may actually spur Kindle sales by introducing
millions of iPhone/iPod Touch users to the world of e-books.

By comparison, reading an e-book with a Kindle is a pleasant
experience. With its paperback-size proportions, Amazon's reader
displays a full page at a time. Its large, ergonomic buttons make it
easy to turn the book's virtual pages, and you can tap the screen to
access certain controls. And its non-backlit e-ink display is far
easier on the eyes than the iPhone's backlit screen, particularly if
you plan to read for an hour or two.

Furthermore, Kindle for iPhone is intentionally crippled. You can't,
for instance, access Kindle's blogs, magazines or newspapers. But
since iPhone users can get most of that content via the Web anyway,
that's probably not a major shortcoming.

development, will be labeled 3.5 instead of 3.1 as it had been
originally planned.

According to today's Firefox meeting notes, the version bump aims to
reflect more accurately the many changes introduced since the release
of Firefox 3.0, the latest major release, last summer. These includes
several changes to tabbed browsing, significant improvements to web
standards compatibility, a deeply enhanced JavaScript engines, and
several new privacy related including an all new private mode that
allows users to clear all their browsing activities at the end of a
session.

The next beta, Beta 3, will still be labeled as 3.1 while all the
necessary changes are made on Mozilla's several development tools.

The code for Beta 3 is now frozen and builds are already being
produced. Final release is expected for next week following QA
procedures.

It also seems Beta 3 will not be the final beta as it was originally
thought, but a fourth beta should follow in the near future with a

Google software bug Shares Docs Without Permission

Google has confirmed that a software bug exposed documents thought to
be privately stored in the Internet giant's online Docs application
service.

The problem was fixed by the weekend and is believed to have affected
only .05 percent of the digital documents at a Google Docs service
that provides text-handling programs as services on the Internet.

"We've identified and fixed a bug where a very small percentage of
users shared some of their documents inadvertently," Google Docs
Product Manager Jennifer Mazzon wrote in a message at the firm's
website on Saturday.

"We're sorry for the trouble this has caused. We understand our users'
concerns (in fact, we were affected by this bug ourselves) and we're
treating this very seriously."

The problem occurred in cases where people had chosen to collaborate
on multiple documents and adjusted settings to allow access to others,
according to Google.

Collaborators were unintentionally given permission to access
documents aside from the ones intended.

"As part of the fix, we used an automated process to remove
collaborators and viewers from the documents that we identified as
having been affected," Mazzon said.

Google and DivX Sign Agreement to Distribute

Seagate and AMD Launches Serial ATA 6Gigabit/second

YouTube blocks premium music videos

YouTube has decided to block viewing premium music video clips from
the UK . Google said Monday it will block U.K. users from watching
music videos on its popular video-sharing site YouTube after
negotiations with Britain's music royalty-collecting body broke down.

The contract that Google has signed with the Performing Right Society,
the organization which collects rights on behalf of music publishers,
composers and lyricists, has expired, and negotiations on a new
agreement have failed. According to the PRS YouTube demanded a new
contract for a fee much higher than previously, as YouTube it would
go, the service would even be a loss. Also wanted to PRS numbers are
not what exactly the new license would fall, as YouTube was not.
Negotiations continue, but until a new agreement is the premium
video's no longer available in the United Kingdom, reports YouTube.

Sony plans lawsuit against government

The Change4Life ad campaign has been started by the British government
in order to bring attention to the negative effects of a sedentary
lifestyle. The image, which depicts a young child playing video games,
gives off the impression that playing video games instead of going
outside may lead to an early death. A handful of other prominent
companies in the gaming industry have already spoken out against this
ad, including Sega, Atari, Future Publishing, TIGA, ELSPA and MCV.

It's not set in stone yet whether or not SCEE plans on going through
with legal action against either The Gate or potentially the British
government itself, but the image is definitely provocative from a
gamer's point of view. That's not to say we don't value exercise -- we
love our sports and physical activities as much as everyone else --
but gaming can certainly be part of a healthy lifestyle.

Apple releases iTunes 8.1 update

Apple updated its iTunes music jukebox and device-management software
to version 8.1 on Wednesday, adding support for the new line of iPod
shuffles released earlier in the day, and adding several other new
features, most notably adding Genius Sidebar support for movies and
television shows.

Apple first introduced Genius in September 2008 as a way for users to
create playlists and find new music based on what they are already
listening to. Now that functionality is available for movies and TV
shows as well, according to Apple. The Genius Sidebar will find
relevant videos much the same way it finds music. When you click on a
movie, iTunes will recommend new content that you may like from the
iTunes Store. (We were unable to verify this feature for ourselves,
though it's possible this feature will be enabled via a server-based
Genius update at a later time.)
