Google Earth: The successful launch

With this launch, GeoEye honour a contract worth 500 million dollars, signed in September 2004, under the programme National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) NextView. It is designed to complement, with the satellite Ikonos, the commercial imaging tools available to the NGA, as part of its national security mission.

Designed to take shots at about 681 km from Earth and moving at a speed of seven kilometers per second, GeoEye-1 will provide images of 41 centimeters per pixel black and white and 1.65 meter in color. The commercial images they have a resolution of 50 centimeters at most because of certain legal provisions. According to GeoEye, the new satellite can take high-resolution images of the entire New Mexico in just one day. It is expected to begin shooting before the end of 2008.

GeoEye-1 was built by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems (Arizona), a specialist defence electronics. The imaging tool for its part has been done by the specialist, fluids and defence systems ITT. The firm is currently in the process of building the second version of GeoEye whose launch is planned for 2011.
